RESUMEN

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a fatal illness caused by a mutated feline coronavirus (FCoV). This disease is characterized by its complexity, resulting from systemic infection, antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE), and challenges in accessing effective therapeutics. Extract derived from Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek (VRE) exhibits various pharmacological effects, including antiviral activity. This study aimed to investigate the antiviral potential of VRE against FCoV, addressing the urgent need to advance the treatment of FIP. We explored the anti-FCoV activity, antiviral mechanism, and combinational application of VRE by means of in vitro antiviral assays. Our findings reveal that VRE effectively inhibited the cytopathic effect induced by FCoV, reduced viral proliferation, and downregulated spike protein expression. Moreover, VRE blocked FCoV in the early and late infection stages and was effective under in vitro ADE infection. Notably, when combined with VRE, the polymerase inhibitor GS-441524 or protease inhibitor GC376 suppressed FCoV more effectively than monotherapy. In conclusion, this study characterizes the antiviral property of VRE against FCoV in vitro, and VRE possesses therapeutic potential for FCoV treatment.

BACKGROUND: Cats in respiratory distress have limited tolerance for manipulation, hindering clinical monitoring. Minute volume (MV) can be utilized to rate dyspnea in humans, but its relationship with respiratory distress in cats remains poorly investigated. HYPOTHESIS: Cats with respiratory distress will show higher MV per kg body weight (MV/BW) than normal cats, and the MV/BW increase will correlate with survival. ANIMALS: Fifty-two cats with respiratory distress from lung parenchymal disease, pleural space disease, lower airway obstruction (LAO), or upper airway obstruction were recruited since 2014. METHODS: This is a prospective observational study. Study cats were placed in a transparent chamber, allowing clinicians to easily observe their breathing status and record ventilation using barometric whole-body plethysmography (BWBP). Ventilatory variables of the 52 cats were compared with those of 14 historic control cats. Follow-up data, including disease category, clinical outcomes, and survival, were prospectively collected. RESULTS: Cats in respiratory distress demonstrated significantly higher MV/BW (397 mL/kg; range, 158-1240) than normal cats (269 mL/kg; range, 168-389; P < .001). Among the etiologies, cats with LAO, parenchymal, and pleural space disease exhibited higher-than-normal MV/BW trends. A cutoff value of 373 mL/kg (1.4-fold increase) indicated abnormally increased breathing efforts (sensitivity, 67%; specificity, 93%). MV/BW was independently associated with increased cardiorespiratory mortality in cats with respiratory distress (adjusted hazard ratio 1.17, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.02-1.35; P = .03). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Breathing efforts in cats can be noninvasively quantified using BWBP. Measurement of MV/BW could serve as a prognostic index for monitoring cats experiencing respiratory distress.

The premortem understanding of the role of feline coronavirus (FeCoV) in the lungs of cats is limited as viruses are seldom inspected in the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) specimens of small animal patients. This study retrospectively analyzed the prevalence of FeCoV in BAL samples from cats with atypical lower airway and lung disease, as well as the clinical characteristics, diagnostic findings, and follow-up information. Of 1162 clinical samples submitted for FeCoV RT-nPCR, 25 were BAL fluid. After excluding 1 case with chronic aspiration, FeCoV was found in 3/24 (13%) BAL specimens, with 2 having immunofluorescence staining confirming the presence of FeCoV within the cytoplasm of alveolar macrophages. The cats with FeCoV in BAL fluid more often had pulmonary nodular lesions (66% vs. 19%, p = 0.14) and multinucleated cells on cytology (100% vs. 48%, p = 0.22) compared to the cats without, but these differences did not reach statistical significance due to the small sample size. Three cats showed an initial positive response to the corticosteroid treatment based on the clinical signs and radiological findings, but the long-term prognosis varied. The clinical suspicion of FeCoV-associated pneumonia or pneumonitis was raised since no other pathogens were found after extensive investigations. Further studies are warranted to investigate the interaction between FeCoV and lung responses in cats.

High-fat diet (HFD)-induced fatty liver disease is a deteriorating risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Mitigating fatty liver disease has been shown to attenuate AD-like pathology in animal models. However, it remains unclear whether enhancing Aß clearance through immunotherapy would in turn attenuate HFD-induced fatty liver or whether its efficacy would be compromised by long-term exposure to HFD. Here, the therapeutic potentials of an anti-Aß antibody, NP106, was investigated in APP/PS1 mice by HFD feeding for 44 weeks. The data demonstrate that NP106 treatment effectively reduced Aß burden and pro-inflammatory cytokines in HFD-fed APP/PS1 mice and ameliorated HFD-aggravated cognitive impairments during the final 18 weeks of the study. The rejuvenating characteristics of microglia were evident in APP/PS1 mice with NP106 treatment, namely enhanced microglial Aß phagocytosis and attenuated microglial lipid accumulation, which may explain the benefits of NP106. Surprisingly, NP106 also reduced HFD-induced hyperglycemia, fatty liver, liver fibrosis, and hepatic lipids, concomitant with modifications in the expressions of genes involved in hepatic lipogenesis and fatty acid oxidation. The data further reveal that brain Aß burden and behavioral deficits were positively correlated with the severity of fatty liver disease and fasting serum glucose levels. In conclusion, our study shows for the first time that anti-Aß immunotherapy using NP106, which alleviates AD-like disorders in APP/PS1 mice, ameliorates fatty liver disease. Minimizing AD-related pathology and symptoms may reduce the vicious interplay between central AD and peripheral fatty liver disease, thereby highlighting the importance of developing AD therapies from a systemic disease perspective.

Various types of human cancer may develop aberrant trophoblastic differentiation, including histological changes and altered expression of ß­human chorionic gonadotropin (ß­hCG). Aberrant trophoblastic differentiation in epithelial cancer is usually associated with poor differentiation, tumor metastasis, unfavorable prognosis and treatment resistance. Since ß­hCG­targeting vaccines have failed in an early phase II trial, it is crucial to obtain a better understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of trophoblastic differentiation in human cancer. The present review summarizes the clinical and translational research on this topic with the aim of accelerating the development of an effective targeted therapy. Ectopic expression of ß­hCG promotes proliferation, migration, invasion, vasculogenesis and epithelial­mesenchymal transition (EMT) in vitro, and enhances metastatic and tumorigenic capabilities in vivo. Signaling cascades modulated by ß­hCG include the TGF­ß receptor pathway, EMT­related pathways, the c­MET receptor tyrosine kinase and mitogen­activated protein kinase/ERK pathways, and the SMAD2/4 pathway. Taken together, these findings indicated that TGF­ß receptors, c­MET and ERK1/2 are potential therapeutic targets. Nevertheless, further investigation on the molecular basis of aberrant trophoblastic differentiation is mandatory to improve the design of precision therapy for this aggressive type of human cancer.

In late 2020, an outbreak of Tembusu virus (TMUV)-associated disease occurred in a 45-day-old white Roman geese flock in Taiwan. Here, we present the identification and isolation of a novel goose-origin TMUV strain designated as NTU/C225/2020. The virus was successfully isolated using minimal-pathogen-free duck embryos. Phylogenetic analysis of the polyprotein gene showed that NTU/C225/2020 clustered together with the earliest isolates from Malaysia and was most closely related to the first Taiwanese TMUV strain, TP1906. Genomic analysis revealed significant amino acid variations among TMUV isolates in NS1 and NS2A protein regions. In the present study, we characterized the NTU/C225/2020 culture in duck embryos, chicken embryos, primary duck embryonated fibroblasts, and DF-1 cells. All host systems were susceptible to NTU/C225/2020 infection, with observable lesions. In addition, animal experiments showed that the intramuscular inoculation of NTU/C225/2020 resulted in growth retardation and hyperthermia in day-old chicks. Gross lesions in the infected chicks included hepatomegaly, hyperemic thymus, and splenomegaly. Viral loads and histopathological damage were displayed in various tissues of both inoculated and naïve co-housed chicks, confirming the direct chick-to-chick contact transmission of TMUV. This is the first in vivo study of a local TMUV strain in Taiwan. Our findings provide essential information for TMUV propagation and suggest a potential risk of disease outbreak in chicken populations.

BACKGROUND: Gingival papilla defects, which cause an unpleasant appearance and involve the upper anterior teeth, may be triggered by several factors. Several noninvasive and invasive techniques have been proposed for gingival papilla reconstruction. The combination of interproximal tunneling and customized connective tissue grafts (CTGs) has shown promise in papilla augmentation. However, due to the narrowness and limited blood supply of the gingival papilla, the long-term outcomes of these techniques remain unpredictable. Therefore, achieving tension-free coronal advancement of the interdental papilla and proper placement of the CTG is crucial for successful long-term outcomes and could provide widely applicable methods for papilla augmentation. CASE REPORT: In this study, we enrolled three patients with gingival papilla defects in the maxillary anterior teeth. For reconstruction, we proposed a modified interproximal tunneling (MIPT) technique combined with a CTG. A crucial modification based on previous studies involved adding a cutback incision to the base of the palatal vertical incision, resulting in tension-free healing. Additionally, the CTG was sutured upright to further enhance the height of the gingiva papilla. To evaluate the efficacy of the MIPT technique, the clinical parameters-including the Jemt papilla index and the distance from the tip of the papilla to the interproximal contact point-were examined using a periodontal probe (UNC15, Hu-friedy) at baseline and 12 months after surgery. All three patients achieved satisfactory papilla reconstruction 12 months after the surgery. These three cases were used to evaluate the efficacy of the MIPT technique combined with the customized CTG. An average increase in the Jemt papilla score from 1.6 to 2.8 and a reduction in the distance from the papilla tip to the contact point of adjacent teeth from 2 mm to 0.08 mm were observed 12 months after surgery. CONCLUSION: The preliminary results confirmed that this technique holds promise for gingival papilla augmentation between tooth/tooth or tooth/implant.

Dynamic lower airway obstruction is the primary component of canine bronchomalacia, but the ventilatory function remains underinvestigated. This prospective study analyzed tidal breathing characteristics in 28 dogs, comprising 14 with severe bronchomalacia diagnosed by bronchoscopy versus 14 without respiratory disease. Spirometry was conducted in all dogs. Bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage or brush under anesthesia was performed in 14 dogs with cough and expiratory effort. Severe bronchomalacia was defined by the severity of collapse and total number of bronchi affected. Ventilatory characteristics were compared between groups. Results revealed that dogs with severe bronchomalacia had lower minute volume (218 vs 338 mL/kg, p = .039) and greater expiratory-to-inspiratory time ratio (1.55 vs 1.35, p = .01) compared to control dogs. The tidal breathing pattern of dogs with bronchomalacia was different from that of normal dogs, and the pattern differed from the concave or flat expiratory curves typical of lower airway obstruction. Compared to control dogs, dogs with severe bronchomalacia had a significantly prolonged low-flow expiratory phase (p < .001) on the flow-time plot and a more exponential shape of the expiratory curve (p < .001) on the volume-time plot. Flow-time index ExpLF/Te (>0.14) and volume-time index Vt-AUCexp (≤31%) had a high ROC-AUC (1.00, 95% confidence interval 0.88 to 1.00) in predicting severe bronchomalacia. In conclusion, the tidal breathing pattern identified here indicates abnormal and complicated ventilatory mechanics in dogs with severe bronchomalacia. The role of this pulmonary functional phenotype should be investigated for disease progression and therapeutic monitoring in canine bronchomalacia.

Pigeon paramyxovirus-1 (PPMV-1), a genetic variant of avian paramyxovirus-1 (APMV-1), has been identified in Columbiformes and is the primary cause of diseases in captive and free-ranging pigeons. However, it has also been reported that PPMV-1 can infect chickens naturally and experimentally, thus posing a potential threat to the poultry industry. This study investigated a lethal outbreak of paramyxovirus infection that occurred among 16 oriental turtle doves (Streptopelia orientalis) in a walk-in aviary at a zoo from March to April 2021. Necropsies were performed, and histopathological findings revealed mild to moderate lymphoplasmacytic infiltration in several organs, such as the pancreas, liver, kidneys, and lungs. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) using formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue blocks, virus isolation from fresh tissue, and in situ hybridization against the fusion (F) protein confirmed the diagnosis for PPMV-1 infection. The isolated strain NTU/C239/21 was fully sequenced by next-generation sequencing, and the results of phylogenetic analyses revealed that the F protein of NTU/C239/21 shared 98.8% nucleotide sequence identity with Pigeon/Taiwan/AHRI121/2017, which was isolated from a feral pigeon in Taiwan. The present study is the first to identify PPMV-1 infection in Streptopelia orientalis and suggests that Streptopelia orientalis may also play an important role in spreading the infection, similar to pigeons in APMV-1 spreading.

Denosumab, an inhibitor of receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand, reduces skeletal-related events (SREs) and is approved for solid tumors with bone metastases. We studied long-term denosumab efficacy and safety because real-world data is scarce. This single-arm, single-center retrospective study included denosumab-treated breast cancer patients with bone metastases. Kaplan-Meier survival curves assessed exposure, SREs, osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), and death. 132 patients were enrolled. The median denosumab exposure was 28.3 months (range 1.0-84.9). In the first year, 11.1% experienced SREs. This increased to 18.6% in the second, 21% in the third, and 35.1% in the fourth year and beyond. The median time to first on-study SRE has not been reached. 10 denosumab users (7.6%) developed ONJ. ONJ incidence was 0.9% in the first year, 6.2% in the second, 13.6% in the third, and 16.2% in subsequent years. The median time to first on-study ONJ has not been reached yet. Seven patients resumed denosumab after careful management of ONJ. Our data suggest that long-term treatment with denosumab may further prevent or postpone SREs at the cost of an increased risk of ONJ. The majority of patients who resumed denosumab did not experience a recurrence of ONJ.

The highly conserved matrix protein 2 ectodomain (M2e) of influenza viruses presents a compelling vaccine antigen candidate for stemming the pandemic threat of the mutation-prone pathogen, yet the low immunogenicity of the diminutive M2e peptide renders vaccine development challenging. A highly potent M2e nanoshell vaccine that confers broad and durable influenza protectivity under a single vaccination is shown. Prepared via asymmetric ionic stabilization for nanoscopic curvature formation, polymeric nanoshells co-encapsulating high densities of M2e peptides and stimulator of interferon genes (STING) agonists are prepared. Robust and long-lasting protectivity against heterotypic influenza viruses is achieved with a single administration of the M2e nanoshells in mice. Mechanistically, molecular adjuvancy by the STING agonist and nanoshell-mediated prolongation of M2e antigen exposure in the lymph node follicles synergistically contribute to the heightened anti-M2e humoral responses. STING agonist-triggered T cell helper functions and extended residence of M2e peptides in the follicular dendritic cell network provide a favorable microenvironment that induces Th1-biased antibody production against the diminutive antigen. These findings highlight a versatile nanoparticulate design that leverages innate immune pathways for enhancing the immunogenicity of weak immunogens. The single-shot nanovaccine further provides a translationally viable platform for pandemic preparedness.

BACKGROUND: Several authors have previously assessed the effects of assertive communication training for nurses to speak up in cases of medical errors. Inconsistent results regarding the nurses' attitudes, behaviors, and confidence levels were noticed. OBJECTIVE: To identify the effectiveness of assertive communication training on nurses' behaviors, attitudes, and confidence levels for speaking up in cases of medical errors and to identify vital components for success. DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, ERIC, Embase, Scopus, and CINAHL were searched up for studies published from the inception of the database to December 16, 2022. METHODS: Two researchers independently performed a primary screening of titles and abstracts for relevant studies, followed by a review of full texts if the references met inclusion criteria and quality assessment. Data were retrieved for nurses and nursing students who received medical error-related assertive communication training for speaking up, and learning outcomes for attitudes, behaviors, and confidence levels were reported based on pooled data. Pooled estimates were calculated using a random-effects model. RESULTS: A total of eleven studies with 1299 participants were included in systematic review, and among them nine studies with 804 participants were analyzed in meta-analysis. From the pooled results, the intervention group, which received assertive communication training, exhibited substantially improved speaking-up behaviors compared with the control group (SMD = 0.58; 95 % CI, 0.14-1.03). Considerable differences were noted in the nurses' times of speaking up in cases of medical errors between pretest (38 %; 95 % CI, 0.14-0.68) and posttest (78 %; 95 %CI, 0.70-0.85) based on the pooled data. The nurses' attitudes and confidence levels for speaking up varied markedly between pretest and posttest. CONCLUSION: Structured assertive communication training may improve nurses' speaking-up behaviors in cases of medical errors. To conduct effective assertive communication training, nursing educators should incorporate multiple teaching approaches into structured training and ensure an adequate training duration.

Neurogenesis is initiated by basic helix-loop-helix proneural proteins. Here, we show that Actin-related protein 6 (Arp6), a core component of the H2A.Z exchange complex SWR1, interacts with proneural proteins and is crucial for efficient onset of proneural protein target gene expression. Arp6 mutants exhibit reduced transcription in sensory organ precursors (SOPs) downstream of the proneural protein patterning event. This leads to retarded differentiation and division of SOPs and smaller sensory organs. These phenotypes are also observed in proneural gene hypomorphic mutants. Proneural protein expression is not reduced in Arp6 mutants. Enhanced proneural gene expression fails to rescue retarded differentiation in Arp6 mutants, suggesting that Arp6 acts downstream of or in parallel with proneural proteins. H2A.Z mutants display Arp6-like retardation in SOPs. Transcriptomic analyses demonstrate that loss of Arp6 and H2A.Z preferentially decreases expression of proneural protein-activated genes. H2A.Z enrichment in nucleosomes around the transcription start site before neurogenesis correlates highly with greater activation of proneural protein target genes by H2A.Z. We propose that upon proneural protein binding to E-box sites, H2A.Z incorporation around the transcription start site allows rapid and efficient activation of target genes, promoting rapid neural differentiation.

BACKGROUND: The ability of medical students to speak up before a medical error occurs is a timely and necessary interaction to prevent potential patient harm. As it may be crucial to improve patient safety, we explored how medical students react to a medical error and provided them appropriate training regarding speaking up about medical issues. METHODS: A quasi-experimental study was conducted in Taiwan involving 153 medical students who participated in a speaking-up simulation course. They were divided into two groups. The first group participated in a non-life-threatening scenario before the intervention, followed by a personalized debriefing session, then a life-threatening scenario after the intervention. The second group participated in a life-threatening scenario before the intervention, followed by a personalized debriefing session, then a non-life-threatening scenario after the intervention. Students also completed patient safety attitude survey. RESULTS: During the preintervention scenario, the overall medical students' speaking-up rate to medical error was 45.1%. The speaking-up rate of medical students in life-threatening scenario was significantly higher than the rate in non-life-threatening scenario before the intervention (64.6% vs 24.3%, p < 0.001). After personalized debriefing, the speaking-up rate to medical errors was significantly improved both in life-threatening scenarios (95.9%, p < 0.001) and in non-life-threatening scenarios (100%, p < 0.001). Male medical students had significantly higher speaking-up rates than female students in life-threatening scenario (76.2% vs 51.4%, p = 0.02). On post-intervention surveys, students provided several reasons for their likelihood of speaking up or remaining silent during a medical error event. CONCLUSIONS: Medical students' rate of speaking-up to medical error was higher in a simulated life-threatening scenario than in a simulated non-life-threatening scenario. Faculty-led personalized debriefing can facilitate medical students' adoption of communication strategies to speak up more in medical error events. Educators should also consider gender differences when they design effective assertive communication courses.[Box: see text].

Recombinant proteins are essential in the development of subunit vaccines. In the design of many recombinant proteins, polyhistidine residues are added to the N- or C-termini of target sequences to facilitate purification. However, whether the addition of tag residues influences the immunogenicity of proteins remains unknown. In this study, the tag-free SARS-CoV-2 RBD and His-tag SARS-CoV-2 RBD proteins were investigated to determine whether there were any differences in their receptor binding affinity and immunogenicity. The results showed that the tag-free RBD protein had a higher affinity for binding with hACE2 receptors than His-tag RBD proteins (EC50: 1.78 µM vs. 7.51 µM). On day 21 after primary immunization with the proteins, the serum ELISA titers of immunized mice were measured and found to be 1:1418 for those immunized with tag-free RBD and only 1:2.4 for His-tag RBD. Two weeks after the booster dose, tag-free-RBD-immunized mice demonstrated a significantly higher neutralizing titer of 1:369 compared with 1:7.9 for His-tag-RBD-immunized mice. Furthermore, neutralizing antibodies induced by tag-free RBD persisted for up to 5 months and demonstrated greater cross-neutralization of the SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant. Evidence from Western blotting showed that the serum of His-tag-RBD-immunized mice recognized irrelevant His-tag proteins. Collectively, we conclude that the addition of a polyhistidine tag on a recombinant protein, when used as a COVID-19 vaccine antigen, may significantly impair protein immunogenicity against SARS-CoV-2. Antibody responses induced were clearly more rapid and robust for the tag-free SARS-CoV-2 RBD than the His-tag SARS-CoV-2 RBD. These findings provide important information for the design of antigens used in the development of COVID-19 subunit vaccines.

BACKGROUND: Use of interprofessional education has greatly expanded and is widely used to foster interprofessional collaborative practice competency in health professionals, especially during medical emergencies. Identifying the interprofessional education delivery mode that can maximize learning outcomes within available resources is crucial for achieving the sustainability of an interprofessional education program. OBJECTIVES: To examine the learning outcomes of simulation-based interprofessional education and video-enhanced interactive discussion interprofessional education modules and to analyze the variable costs between these two interprofessional education modules. DESIGN: A prospective quasi-experimental study. SETTING: A medical university in Northern Taiwan. PARTICIPANTS: 24 medical students and 48 nursing students enrolled in a 4-week simulation-based interprofessional education or video-enhanced interactive discussion interprofessional education program. METHODS: Students' medical task performance, critical medical task performance, team behavior performance, and interprofessional collaboration attitude were examined at the pretest and posttest by using an objective structured checklist and team performance rating scale with a hands-on simulation model and structured questionnaires. The variable costs for simulation-based interprofessional education and video-enhanced interactive discussion interprofessional education were estimated upon the completion of the course. RESULTS: All learning outcomes significantly improved for both the groups from the pretest to posttest. After the intervention, the simulation-based interprofessional education group exhibited significantly higher scores in medical task performance, critical medical task performance and team behavior performance than the video-enhanced interactive discussion interprofessional education group at the posttest. No significant difference was noted in interprofessional collaboration attitude between the groups. Cost analysis revealed that the simulation-based interprofessional education program was approximately two times more expensive in terms of staffing costs and required 1.3 times greater space charges than the video-enhanced interactive discussion interprofessional education program. CONCLUSION: Both simulation-based interprofessional education and video-enhanced interactive discussion interprofessional education modules effectively improved medical and nursing students' medical task performance, critical medical task performance and team behavior performance. The simulation-based interprofessional education group had more favorable learning outcomes, but the associated costs were higher. Educators should consider both learning outcomes and cost when choosing a design strategy simulation-based interprofessional education vs. video-enhanced interactive discussion interprofessional education for interprofessional education module development.

BACKGROUND: Interprofessional collaborative practice is essential for meeting patients' needs and improving their health outcomes; thus, the effectiveness of interprofessional education (IPE) should be clearly identified. There is insufficient evidence in the literature to determine the outcomes of IPE compared to traditional single-profession education (SPE). This study aimed to compare the outcomes of IPE and SPE during a simulation training course. METHODS: The study design was a mixed-methods, incorporated cross-over design and a qualitative survey. A total of 54 students including 18 medical students and 36 nursing students were recruited from March to April 2019. The 4-week simulation course was designed based on Kolb's experimental learning theory and Bandura's social learning theory. Participants were evenly divided into group 1 (received IPE-learning followed by SPE-learning), and group 2 (received SPE-learning followed by IPE-learning). Students' medical task performance, team behavior performance, teamwork attitude, and patient safety attitude were collected at pretest, mid-test, and posttest. Descriptive statistics and repeated measures analysis of variance were used. End-of-study qualitative feedback was collected, and content analysis was performed. RESULTS: Both groups demonstrated moderate-to-large within-group improvements for multiple learning outcomes at mid-test. Group 1 students' medical task performance (F = 97.25; P < 0.001) and team behavior performance (F = 31.17; P < 0.001) improved significantly. Group 2 students' medical task performance (F = 77.77; P < 0.001), team behavior performance (F = 40.14; P < 0.001), and patient safety attitude (F = 6.82; P < 0.01) improved significantly. Outcome differences between groups were nonsignificant. Qualitative themes identified included: personal factor, professional factor, interprofessional relationship, and learning. The IPE program provided students with exposure to other professions and revealed differences in expertise and responsibilities. CONCLUSION: IPE-simulation and SPE-simulation were effective interventions that enabled medical and nursing students to develop critical medical management and team behavior performance. IPE-simulation provided more opportunities for improving competencies in interprofessional collaborative practice. In circumstances with limited teaching resources, SPE-simulation can be an acceptable alternative to IPE-simulation.

BACKGROUND: Bronchiolar disorders are rarely recognized in cats. Constrictive bronchiolitis obliterans is characterized by concentric peribronchiolar fibrosis and inflammation of the bronchioles, but the underlying causes remain poorly understood in current small animal medicine. CASE PRESENTATION: A 9-year-old cat presented with paroxysmal tachypnea, infrequent cough and persistent labor breathing. Thoracic radiography showed lung hyperinflation and bronchointerstitial pattern, and pulmonary function assessment revealed flow limitation in the late-expiratory phase and poor response to short-acting bronchodilator. Dorsally distributed subpleural ground glass opacities with distinct margin and tree-in-bud opacities were observed on lung high-resolution computed tomography. The cat underwent bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and showed severe neutrophilic inflammation. Feline herpesvirus was the only pathogen detected in the BAL fluid. Multiple therapeutic attempts were unsuccessful and the cat died 8 weeks after the initial presentation. Necropsy revealed the infiltration of inflammatory cells, obstruction of the bronchiolar lumen, and submucosal concentric fibrosis suggesting constrictive bronchiolitis obliterans. Combining the pre- and post-mortem findings, as well as the time from symptom onset or BAL to necropsy, constrictive bronchiolitis obliterans was possibly triggered by a preceding feline herpesvirus infection in this case. CONCLUSIONS: The history of nonvaccinated status, lower airway neutrophilic inflammation, and presence of feline herpesvirus in the BAL fluid without coexistence of other pathogens led to the presumption that constrictive bronchiolitis obliterans was induced by a preceding feline herpesvirus infection in this cat. The pathological changes of bronchiolitis obliterans induced by a preceding feline herpesvirus infection could be different from that of cats with acute herpesvirus pneumonia, such as intranuclear inclusions would disappear over time and were no longer found 7-10 days after inoculation. The presence of patchy distribution of subpleural ground glass opacities on lung high-resolution computed tomography should raise the suspicion of peribronchiolar fibrosis. Clinical awareness of bronchiolar disorders as a differential diagnosis is important in cats with lung hyperinflation and labored breathing who show poor reversibility to bronchodilator.
